How can the print and online worlds exist in harmony?
Web pages get printed, plain and simple. New features need to be added to the
Web (browsers, HTML) to increase the usefulness of the paper material generated
form the Web. Examples:
- Being able to group pages into a "book" which can be printed with one command.
Pages should be numbered and a table of contents should be generated.
- A tag to keep certain parts of the page form being printed (eg, navigation
buttons)
Another problem is managing documents that must exist in both domains
simultaneously, such as academic papers and documentation.
And then we shifted to talk about how people trained in the print media design
for the Web. With today's corporate use of the Web (mainly for advertising and
simply to have a presence), many print design techniques work fine. But as the
corporate goals change to building relationships with consumers, then HCI
training will become much more important.
