What will be done as a result of this workshop?

We wanted to set some very specific and attainable goals to accomplish as a result of this workshop.
Discussion forum
ACM and SIGCHI allowed the creation of Web space and a mailing list to support continued discussion of these issues. "webhci" is a growing resource of information about the workshop, related events, and other sources of information about HCI issues of the Web. A webhci mailing list has also been set up for announcements and to facilitate discussion.

Promote involvement
We want to promote "getting involved in the Web" to the HCI community. The Web is a unique system where individuals can get involved and can make a difference. THe first way we are going to promote involvement is to look into hainvg SIGCHI join the World Wide Web Consortium. This would allow SIGCHI members to participate in W3C working groups and perhaps even allow SIGCHI members to volunteer their time to the consortium.

Encourage good Web designs
We are going to try to promote good designs on the Web two ways. One way is to encourage Web sites to apply to interactions design awards, with perhaps even sugesteing a special category of awards for the Web. Austin Henderson is the contact for this.

Another way is to collect good design examples and publish this very selective list on the Web. A committee is being formed to judge the sites. Diana Gromala is the contact for this item.

Spread the word to the HCI community
We will have a report in the next SIGCHI Bulletin, summarizing what we discussed and encouraging the community to get involved.

Feedback from other CHI 96 attendees
We got feedback from other attendees in several ways.

One was a poster that was put together, listing the issues and summarizing the main points of discussion. Attendees could annotate the poster with their own information and views. Keith Instone was on hand many times to discuss issues with people and he was extremely pleased with the reaction and interest from those viewing the poster.

Another way we got the word out to attendees was at the Pre-Conference Report, a special session where workshops and other earlier events reported on what happened. Keith only had 5 minutes, so he did not get to explain as much as he wanted, but it was still a very worthwhile experience.

The third way we tried to get CHI 96 attendees involved was to have a meeting during lunch where attendees who were not at the workshop but were still interested could get together. Diane Gromala organized this and has a report....
