Here is a short history of the list:
Keith Instone started the "WEBHCI" mailing list for the participants of a CHI 96 workshop. The two original members that contribute the most to CHI-WEB still today are Scott Berkun and David Gilmore.
Keith also started a web page in 1996 full of links about HCI and the web that eventually grew into Usable Web. It had ten links that represented all that could be found on web usability at that time (there are now 100 times more).
WEBHCI became CHI-WEB when SIGCHI adopted guidelines on the names of its lists. That was in January of 97, when the archives start.
Shortly after that, Bart van Roey merged his WebUI with CHI-WEB's.
Not much of excitement for 1998 and1999, just good discussions and list growth.
December 1999, William Hudson volunteers to co-moderate when he notices that postings arrive like London buses (none for a long time and then many at once). More than one pair of hands also leads to more formal posting guidelines that get added to the CHI-WEB site.
In early 2000, we had a "fight" break out. The SIGCHI chair got involved and the list became more cordial when someone voluntarily left the list.
Keith retires in the spring of 2001. William sets up a team to moderate CHI-WEB on a rota basis. Current team members (November 2003) are David Broschinsky, Kayla Block, Ash Donaldson, Stephen Ellison, Kathy Gill, Cindy Lu, Sumanth Muthyala, Gerard Torenvliet and Bob Warren.
(If you would like to join the moderation team, please contact William Hudson. It takes about half an hour per day. Each moderator is "on duty" for one week.)
