Building an International Community: Designing Interactive Systems for/ with Communities in the Developing World Abstract: Our workshop will facilitate networking between Global South and Global North researchers designing interactive systems as part of international development work. We aim to discuss methods, challenges, and issues when working on international development projects and to collectively work towards improving our relations, and techniques for community centered design and development work. We will provide researchers from the Global North the opportunity to learn more about the context and projects occurring in the Global South. Moreover, we will provide a forum for Global South researchers to share their knowledge and experiences of doing development work as well as to frame the context in which this work occurs for an international audience. Tis workshop is one part of a larger process of building up the international development community. Our goal is to provide an environment to structure discussions by focusing on practical examples of the problems faced by real projects. See the CfP.
Abstract: The main goal of this workshop is to provide designers with a better understanding of developing ways to enhance the positive experience and effectiveness of interactive media by utilizing the psychological and culturally developed effects of cuteness. We would also like to explore a range of interactive experiences involving the idea of cuteness and examine the related components. Based on these experiences, the next generation user interfaces can be built to take advantage of the cuteness factor and its unique effects on the experience which can establish and maintain more meaningful relationships with the users and encourage happiness, self confidence, motivate the user to action, and provide overall positive experiences. www.cutemedia.org
Abstract: The goal of the workshop is to advance the pragmatical and theoretical understanding of innovation in interaction design. The workshop seeks to explore how to describe, talk about, and understand in which ways and under which circumstances users and designers become innovative and creative actors in design activities. The Psychological Basis for UI Design RulesAbstract: UI design rules, guidelines, and heuristics are not simple recipes to be applied mindlessly. Applying them effectively requires determining their applicability (and precedence) in specific situations. It also requires balancing the trade-offs that inevitably arise in situations when design rules appear to contradict each other. By understanding the underlying psychology for the design rules, designers and evaluators enhance their ability to interpret and apply them. After completing this course, participants will: Understand the basic cognitive and perceptual psychology underlying UI design principles, guidelines, and heuristics. Duration 3 hrs.
