Welcome!
Emerging technologies are profoundly changing how people, organizations,
and societies interact. The Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW)
Conference is the premier international conference for research and development
achievements in design, introduction, and use of these technologies.
Prominent researchers at the MIT Media Lab, Andersen Consulting, Xerox
PARC, Fujitsu Labs, Carnegie Mellon, IBM Watson, AT&T Labs, Sun, Lucent, and
other universities, companies, and government labs from around the world will
present at this highly selective conference.
Topics include infrastructures for collaboration, organizational
culture, shared visual spaces, asynchronous communication, groupware
primitives, awareness, sustaining relationships online, social filtering,
web-based customer service, mobile computing, and new interaction paradigms. As
we move beyond the initial exploration of new technologies and practices,
understanding research results is critical.
A full technical and social program will introduce new participants to
the field, deepen and broaden the expertise of those familiar with it, and
encourage interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations.
Opening Plenary: The ACM Turing Award Lecture by Douglas Engelbart
The general technical sessions begin on Monday, November 16, with an opening address by Douglas
Engelbart, who this year received ACM's most prestigious award and will present
his acceptance lecture. Engelbart's vision of the potential of computing has
ranged from technical innovations such as the invention of the mouse to early
recognition of the need for technical, organizational, and social
co-evolution.
The closing plenary will be
given on Wednesday, November 18 by William J. Mitchell, Dean of the MIT
School of Architecture and Planning and author of City of Bits, one
of the first books published both digitally and in print.
These addresses bracket over 40 technical papers and 4 panels comprising leading
researchers and practitioners. A video and
demo program are also important
conference features.
A tutorial program precedes the
conference. On Sunday, November 15, leading experts in CSCW research and
groupware development will share their knowledge in full-day and half-day
tutorials. This is an invaluable opportunity to learn from internationally
recognized figures at a relatively low cost.
Workshops will focus on selected
topics on Saturday, November 14, organized in cooperation with the Participatory Design Conference. You must apply in
advance to participate in these small group
workshops.
Everyone registered for the conference will travel by monorail on Monday
evening to a
reception at the Pacific Science Center. We will explore exhibits
while enjoying stimulating conversations and cuisine of the Pacific
Northwest.
Benefactors and Sponsors enable us to provide conference participants
with more than they pay for, significantly enhancing the experience. We
especially thank our benefactors
SMART Technologies,
Lotus, and
Microsoft Research.
We also thank our sponsors
Sun Microsystems and
MITRE and our affiliate
The Boeing Company. We are also grateful
to the many volunteers whose efforts make the conference possible.
Take advantage of the early registration discount, and we will see you
in Seattle!
