Participatory Design Conference
The Sixth Biennial Conference on Participatory Design will take place in New York City, Tuesday, November 28 through Friday, December 1, immediately preceding CSCW 2000. The Participatory Design conferences, held every two years since 1990, have brought together a multidisciplinary and international group of researchers, designers, practitioners, users, and managers. Participants share and learn about advances in practices, methods, and theory throughout the cycle of design. PDC 2000 is an international forum where diverse communities can meet, exchange ideas and experiences, and collaboratively invent the future of participatory work. PDC 2000's theme is "Designing Digital Environments--Bringing in more voices." Participatory Design (PD) is a set of diverse ways of thinking, planning, and acting through which people make their work, technologies, and social institutions more responsive to human needs. Conference information and PD resources are available on the web: http://www.cpsr.org/conferences/pdc2000/ Workshop on Software Architectures for Cooperative Systems, hosted by IFIP Working Group 2.7/13.4 December 1, Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel, Philadelphia, PA Which Architecture for What?: Toward Property Based Selection of Software Architectures for Cooperative Systems Software architecture styles for CSCW systems capture high-level implementation designs, offering different tradeoffs amongst performance and ergonomic properties. For example, architecture styles allow developers to make high-level tradeoffs in an application's response time, feedthrough time, jitter, security, and fault tolerance. Despite considerable research in software architectures for CSCW systems, surprisingly little guidance is available for developers wishing to choose an appropriate architecture for a collaborative application. At the root of this problem is a lack of rigorous investigation of the properties of the various CSCW architectural styles. In this workshop we shall establish a research agenda towards investigating properties of software architectures that can be matched to requirements of CSCW applications. This workshop organized by IFIP Working Group 2.7/13.4 on User Interface Engineering will bring together researchers and practitioners in software engineering, distributed systems and CSCW application development.
