Welcome!

The ACM CSCW conference is a leading forum for presenting and discussing research and development achievements concerning the use of computer technologies to support collaborative activities, as well as the impact of digital collaboration technologies on users, groups, organizations and society.

CSCW 2000 offers a full technical and social program designed to introduce newcomers to the field, deepen and broaden expertise, and encourage interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations.

Topics include culture and community, proximate and distant collaboration, remote guidance, mobile work and technology, awareness and attention, collaborative instruction and distance learning, managing expertise, video technologies, collaboration infrastructures, privacy, instant messaging, consistency management, and new interaction paradigms.

Prominent researchers at the University of Michigan, Microsoft Research, the Royal Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, IBM T.J. Watson, AT&T Labs, UC Irvine, Lucent, and other universities, companies, and government labs from around the world will present at this highly selective conference.

General technical sessions begin on Monday, December 4, with Robert Putnam discussing his recent book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. The conference closes on Wednesday, December 6, with an address by Warren Thorngate speaking on The Economics of Attention.

A tutorial program precedes the conference. On Sunday December 3rd leading experts in CSCW research and groupware development will share their knowledge in full-day and half-day tutorials. This is an invaluable opportunity to learn from internationally recognized figures at a relatively low cost.

Workshops will focus on selected topics on Saturday December 2nd. You must apply in advance to participate in these small groups.

Everyone registered for the conference is invited to the conference reception to be held on the evening of Monday December 4th at the Franklin Institute Science Museum. Food and drinks will be served as we enjoy stimulating conversation, accompanied by the sounds of Philly jazz.

Other features not to miss: The CSCW 2000 video program can be viewed on your hotel room television or in Salon 9 any time the conference is in session. We highly recommend the Demonstrations Program on Tuesday, 4:30-6:00pm in the Conference Center Ballroom. Finally, a room is reserved for informal "Birds of a Feather" sessions that you define yourself. You can create or join a "BOF" on a bulletin board in the foyer outside of Ballrooms A and B.

Benefactors and Sponsors significantly enhance the conference experience by enabling us to provide conference participants with more than they pay for. We especially thank our benefactors Sun Microsystems, Lotus Development Corporation, SMART Technologies, Microsoft Research, WebEx, IBM, and AT&T. We are also grateful to the many volunteers whose efforts make the conference possible.

We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia. Register now!
