MONDAY The workshop will discuss HCI approaches, methods, and techniques used in different domains such as health care, engineering, education, or entertainment. The main goal is to understand the interaction of domain and HCI issues. For example, are design guidelines domain-neutral or not? Our objectives are to produce a categorization of HCI methods and practices across domains, identifying the type of systems in which a technique is most useful; the stage of development in which a methodology is appropriate; the resources needed to conduct an HCI project; and the appropriate measures for various techniques. We plan to discuss various methods of data collection for HCI in specific domains that would be of interest to others. We expect participants to search for common ground across domains, to identify key differences, and to synthesize new methodologies, where possible.
Participants will be selected on the basis of a 4-5 page position paper
describing their background, a large HCI project in one specific domain, and
the general and domain-specific methods and techniques applied during all
phases of development. Three domains will be chosen for discussion at the
workshop on the basis of participants' statements of experience and interest.
These three domains will be presented on a pre-workshop web site.
