Late-Breaking Results provides you with the opportunity to present your most up-to-date research and application results at CHI 99.

The late-breaking results format is particularly suitable for presenting exciting new findings, as well as work that has demonstrated special promise, but that is still ongoing. The two-page submission should include:

  • a concise description of the research focus or new idea
  • your results or findings
  • implications of your work to the field of HCI
  • recommendations for further investigation

Full literature searches are not expected, although relevant citations should be included. Summaries of wider findings or reduced versions of longer papers are not suitable for the late-breaking submission category.

Late-breaking submissions are held to the same high standards of excellence as full papers. Selection of late-breaking results will be based on contribution to the HCI community, validity of the results, originality of the work, and quality of the presentation.

Suite of Papers

In addition to stand-alone late-breaking submissions, we encourage suites of submissions that are unified by taking diverse perspectives on a common theme. A suite consists of four or more late-breaking results papers that examine clearly distinct aspects of a common research theme or idea, along with an overview paper that introduces the topic.

A suite of papers shows the multiple innovations that such a common theme can create and/or the different results achieved by diverse approaches to the common theme. Accepted suites will be presented in a single session.

A suite submission should include:

  • an overview paper that introduces the topic, explains the rationale for for the suite, and outlines the state of the art for the topic area
  • at least four late-breaking results papers

Review Process

All late-breaking results papers will be reviewed according to the same criteria. Each submission will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the field who will judge the submission on its contribution to HCI, validity of the results, originality of work, and quality of presentation, as well as its suitability for presentation in a two-page paper format.

Late-breaking results papers submitted as part of suites will be reviewed first individually along with all other submissions in the late-breaking results category. Once a proposed suite has had four or more of its submissions accepted on an individual basis, the suite will be considered for acceptance based on a review of the overview paper that accompanies the suite submission. Any paper accepted during the individual review process will still be accepted even if its corresponding suite is not accepted. Any paper rejected during the individual review process will still be rejected even if its corresponding suite is accepted.

Format

Hardcopy Version

Prepare a two-page camera-ready paper suitable for publication in the CHI 99 Extended Abstracts. It must be in the CHI Conference Publications Format and include the title, author information, abstract, keywords, body, and references.

For a Suite, include one additional overview two-page paper as specified above.

Electronic Version

An electronic version of the two-page paper must be provided on a disk (PC or Mac) as part of the submission. The disk should have a label indicating the disk's type (PC or Mac), the primary author, and the title of the submission.

Save your file in RTF or Microsoft Word format. (If you are using a non-English word processor, please save your file as "English RTF" or ensure that no special characters remain in the file).

Use the primary author's name as the file name; for example, SMITHJ.RTF or SMITHJ.DOC. RTF format can be created from most word processors.

If you have any difficulties please contact the Late-Breaking Results Chair.

To assist in the review process, please, at the same time, email a copy of the file to the Send To email address shown. The file should be an attachment to an email message with the subject CHI 99 Paper: title (where "title" is the title of your paper).

Upon Acceptance

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by email by mid-March 1999. Please note that due to publication schedules, revisions will not be possible. Please ensure that your paper is clearly written, carefully proofread, and correctly formatted.

At the conference

Accepted late-breaking results papers will be scheduled for 10 minutes of presentation with up to 5 minutes for discussion. Suite overviews will be scheduled for 7 minutes of presentation with up to 3 minutes for discussion.

For your presentation, you will have standard computer and audio visual support. Computer support includes: 1 PC with CD-ROM and Zip drive, 1 Mac with CD-ROM and Zip drive, the most current commercially available operating systems. Standard audio support includes: a clip-on, podium, or table microphone; a connection from the computer sound output to the room audio; and the ability to play audio cassettes or CDs. Standard visual support includes: non-simultaneous projection of 35mm slides, overheads, VHS and PAL video, and computer displays with resolution up to 600 by 800 pixels.
