The CHI 99 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for a group of doctoral students to explore together their research interests in an interdisciplinary workshop with a group of established researchers. The Consortium has the following objectives:
The Consortium will be conducted in a two-day workshop format on Sunday and Monday of the conference week. Student participants in the Consortium receive complimentary conference registration and partial travel reimbursement. Review ProcessThe Doctoral Consortium review committee will select participants on the basis of their anticipated contribution to the Consortium objectives. The participants in the Doctoral Consortium will reflect a wide range of approaches to the study of human-computer interaction. Participants typically have settled on thesis directions and had their research proposals accepted by their thesis committees. FormatTo apply to the Doctoral Consortium, prepare a submission package consisting of an extended abstract, biographical information, letter of recommendation, and poster layout. Extended AbstractPrepare a two-page extended abstract of your thesis work, suitable for publication in the CHI 99 Extended Abstracts. It must be in the Conference Publications Format and should include the title, author information, abstract, keywords, thesis research summary, and references. Biographical InformationProvide information on your background and relevant experience. Include the information in a curriculum vita plus additional information that may indicate your potential contributions to the Consortium. Letter of RecommendationProvide a letter of recommendation from your thesis advisor. It must include an assessment of the current status of your thesis research and an expected date for thesis submission. Poster LayoutProvide a one-page diagram showing the layout of the poster that will be displayed with the Student Posters. Upon AcceptanceAll applicants to the Consortium will be notified by late-November 1998. Extended abstracts of accepted submissions will be published in the CHI 99 Extended Abstracts. Author Kits containing detailed instructions on how to submit camera-ready materials for publication will be mailed with notifications of acceptance. These materials are due by 8 January 1999.
