Two-page papers provide the opportunity to report late-breaking results, well-formulated but untested ideas, ongoing work or tightly-focused research or application results. Two-page papers are particularly suitable for describing new or exciting ideas or findings, without the demands of a formal paper structure. Full literature searches are not expected, although relevant citations should be included. Two-page papers will be judged on the originality, interest and potential importance of the work to the HCI community. They are not suitable for summarizing wider findings, and should concentrate on a topic where the author(s) can make a unique contribution.

Examples

  • the development of new lines of HCI research integrating ideas from other disciplines
  • significant and interesting results from the use of HCI techniques in industry
  • novel methods that will provide a basis for the next phase of HCI research
  • challenges for HCI in application domains such as education, entertainment or health care

Suite of Papers

As well as stand alone two-page papers for presentation in general sessions, we encourage Suites of papers that are unified by taking diverse perspectives on a common theme by authors from more than one organization. Accepted Suites will be presented in a single session. A Suite submission should include:
  • an overview paper, summarizing the Suite,
  • at least four "results" papers that would be suitable as stand-alone two-page papers, and
  • two summary papers, one summarizing the state of the art, the other describing future work that would successfully advance the state of the art.

Suite organizers are encouraged to use mailing lists and the Web to invite Suite contributions in order to meet the following criteria:

  • authors of overview and summary papers should not all be from the same institution,
  • authors of "results" papers should not all be from the same institution,
  • papers should cover a balanced range of approaches, and
  • ideally, authors should come from more than one country

Review Process

All two-page papers will be reviewed according to the same criteria. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the field, using criteria including originality and innovation, importance, clarity, diversity of views and suitability for presentation in a two-page paper format. If a complete Suite of papers is not accepted, then each component submission will be considered as an individual submission on its own merits. For the conference, papers submitted as part of a Suite may be included in general two-page paper sessions, and stand-alone papers might be incorporated into Suites.

Format

Prepare a two-page camera-ready paper, suitable for publication in the CHI 98 Summary. It must be in the Conference Publications Format, containing the title, authors, contact information, keywords, abstract, body and references.

For a Suite, include three additional two-page papers: an overview that explores the common themes and diversity of the Suite, a summary of the state-of-the-art and a summary of suggested future work.

Electronic Version

(These instructions have changed from what appears in the original Call For Participation. Please follow these new directions.)

An electronic version of the two-page paper must be provided on a disk (PC or Mac) as part of the submission. The disk should have a label indicating the disk's type (PC or Mac), the primary author and the title of the submission.

Save your submission on the disk in RTF format. Use the primary author's name as the file name; for example, SMITHJ.RTF. RTF format can be created from most word processors, but if you have any difficulties please contact: chi98-lbr@acm.org.

To assist in the review process, please at the same time email a copy of the file to: chi98-lbr@acm.org. The file should be an attachment to an email message with the subject "CHI 98 Paper: title" (where "title" is the title of your paper).

Upon Acceptance

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by email by mid-February. Please note that due to publication schedules, revisions to submitted camera-ready papers will not be possible. We therefore encourage authors to take the time to perfect their papers, so that they are clearly expressed, carefully proof-read and in the required layout.

At the conference

Accepted two-page papers will be scheduled for 10 minutes of presentation with up to 5 minutes for discussion. Suite overviews and summaries will be scheduled for 7 minutes of presentation with up to 3 minutes for discussion.

Submissions

  1. Your submission must be in English.
  2. Electronic and fax submissions are not accepted.
  3. Submissions which arrive after the deadline will not be considered.
  4. Your submission should contain no proprietary or confidential material and should cite no proprietary or confidential publications.
  5. Responsibility for permissions to use video, audio or pictures of identifiable people rests with you, not CHI 98.
  6. We strongly suggest the use of express mail or a courier service, for speedy delivery. Customs labels should bear the words "Educational materials with no commercial value."
