Introduction
The Visual Interaction Design SIG has been active in the CHI community for several years by hosting a column in the SIGCHI Bulletin, with strong representation in interactions and several previous and successful SIG meetings at CHI. This year we continue this tradition with a meeting on the theme of "Designing the Quality Experience."
interactions began sponsoring an annual design award for interactive systems last year . Their judging criteria for the inaugural awards, discussed in [1], were focused by one key question: how does effective interaction design provide people with a successful and satisfying experience? This discussion ended with a call for a dialog among interaction designers to discuss how we define quality experience in the design of interactive systems. This meeting takes to heart that call.
Goals
Our goals are to engage the Visual Interaction Design community in this important discussion, taking advantage of the face-to-face dialog possible at the conference. What does designing for experience mean? How do the interactions award criteria relate to its meaning? How do we embody this ideal in concrete form? These are some of the questions we would like to get closer to answering.
Speakers and Format
The meeting will be a combination of presentations and discussion, with some follow-up from last year's meeting. The speakers will include:
- Professor Dan Boyarski, Carnegie Mellon University. Dan will be presenting screen legibility research conducted in the summer of 1996 for Microsoft. This research was introduced at last year's SIG VID meeting by Virginia Howlett.
- Lauralee Alben, Alben + Faris. Lauralee will be introducing the idea of designing for experience.
- Jodi Forlizzi, graduate student in Interaction Design, Carnegie Mellon University. Jodi will be speaking on the nature of experience and its impact on the design of a digital walking stick.
- Gitta Salomon, Swim Interaction Design Studio. Gitta will be speaking further on the topic of experience in interaction design.
The meeting will then be opened for facilitated discussion on the ideas presented.
Participants
This meeting will be of interest to visual interface designers, interaction designers, and any others who are interested in the idea of enhancing the quality of experience of people who use computer systems.
