SUMMARY OF TOPIC
In previous CHI pre-conference workshops, HCI educators and industrial
professionals have met to address pertinent HCI education issues. Workshop
themes have ranged from HCI knowledge and skills needed for effective HCI
professional practice (CHI '92), to designs for teaching HCI (CHI'94), and
to increasing collaboration between academia and industry (CHI '95 and CHI
'96).
Participants have benefited from sharing their experiences, pedagogical
practices and issues, and have often exchanged course or class exercises,
course structures, lab assignments, and other sample resources. There is a
need to expand the forum to the larger SIGCHI education community within
the CHI conference proper, and thereby increase the opportunity for
professional networking among HCI educators. This SIG "open house" intends
to continue the spirit of previous HCI education-oriented events and to
broaden the professional networking opportunities for HCI educators.
GOALS
The goals of this SIG are for attendees to increase networking
opportunities for HCI educators, and to promote the exchange of common and
unique resources, delivery format structures and learning strategies, and
future concerns. We would like an outcome of this SIG to include a
devising of strategies for making HCI resources more visible to HCI
educators.
FORMAT
The SIG will begin with a brief introduction and sharing of HCI teaching
experiences and resources by the session leaders. An "open house" forum
will be maintained to encourage informal discussion of issues.
A summary of the SIG and strategies for making HCI resources more visible
to the CHI education community will be submitted to the SIGCHI Bulletin.
ISSUES
Based on previous discussions at HCI education-oriented events, we have
formed a core of three categories to spark discussion during the SIG:
1. Resources
- What are used as primary texts, articles, and other references to teach
an overview course in HCI?
- Where can one find the latest resources (e.g. texts, syllabi, class and
course exercises, research, industry input, research labs and projects,
etc.)?
2. Delivery Format Structures and Learning Strategies
- What are innovative ways of delivering HCI courses and programs?
- traditional campus-based
- distance learning (e.g. online, Web-based, other)
- What are interesting and challenging course work assignments and
projects given in HCI courses?
- What are some obstacles faced when teaching HCI?
3. Future Concerns
- What can the CHI education community do to make resources and
experiences more visible to HCI educators at large?
