Organization Overviews
Organization Overviews are 30-minute summaries of HCI work taking place in
institutions, organizations, or groups. For these presentations, the
emphasis is on the circumstances under which work is done, the underlying
goals, policies, and organizational background, and perspectives of past,
present and "future" HCI efforts. Of interest is how a group came into
being, how the participants influence each other as well as other groups
with whom they are affiliated, what the group's plans and visions for the
future are, and on what these plans are based. We aim to bring together
people to report about their work with the focus on giving the "big
picture" rather than the technically interesting spotlight on a singular
scientific result. Different groups should be represented in order to open
the door for cooperation within our community along both traditional and
less obvious lines. The attendees of the organizational overviews should
be able to see the shared perspectives between groups, despite different
cultural, organizational, and geographical backgrounds. We want to work on
finding out about future visions in a very broad sense.
Types Of Organization Overviews
Overviews may describe HCI work
in:
- University, corporate, or government research groups or institutions,
- Product development or consultancy organizations,
- Countries or geographical region,
- Collaborative efforts involving several groups or organizations, and
- Partnerships of different types
of groups, or groups cooperating across geographical, political, or
cultural boundaries.
Review Process
Proposals will be reviewed for acceptance taking
into account the interest to members of the HCI community of the work
described and the objective of informing the community of HCI activity
world wide.
Format
Prepare a two-page Extended Abstract of the organization
overview, suitable for publication in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts. It
must be prepared in the Conference
Proceedings format. It should include:
- the HCI domains
addressed by the work of the organization,
- the focus, themes, major
processes, organizational setting, history, and future plans,
- the
people involved (e.g. number and backgrounds),
- specific projects
and/or special approaches,
- key publications, products, or other
results, and
- materials that will be used, such as photographs, videos,
or demonstrations, to help viewers of a presentation to understand the
work.
Upon Acceptance
Authors will be notified of acceptance or
rejection by mid-November 1996. Summaries of accepted organization
overviews will be published in the CHI 97 Extended Abstracts and in the
CHI 97 Electronic Publication.
The primary author of each accepted
organization overview will receive an Author Kit with detailed
instructions on how to submit camera-ready and electronic materials for
publication. These materials are due by 3 January 1997.
At the Conference
At the conference, the overview should be
presented by a major participant in the work. The presentation should be
based on the material described in the Extended Abstract. It should be
appropriate for a 30-minute verbal presentation that includes 5 minutes
for audience questions. The speaker should make good use of visual
information to give the audience a clear understanding of the group's
work.
