Tutorial #13

Interface Issues and Interaction Strategies for Information Retrieval Systems

Scott Henninger, University of Nebraska
Nick Belkin, Rutgers University

Sunday, April 14, full-day

Benefits

You will learn about state-of-the-art Information Retrieval (IR) techniques and gain insight into the problems designers face in supporting people's interaction with IR systems. You will also learn how to evaluate interactive IR systems and how to structure the design process to support effective user IR interaction.

Origins

This highly rated tutorial from CHI '95 is updated for CHI 96.

Features

Audience

Anyone interested in designing and implementing effective interactive retrieval system interfaces. Applications include access mechanisms to digital libraries, end-user interactive retrieval systems, and filtering and routing systems. Experience with interactive retrieval systems is not required, but will be helpful.

Presentation

Lecture, system demonstrations, videos, and discussion.

Instructors

Scott Henninger is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Scott's research interests include interactive retrieval tools, multimedia interfaces, intelligent retrieval methods, cognitive analysis of users, and locating information for software reuse. Nick Belkin has been a Professor in the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies at Rutgers University since 1985. His research interests are in information retrieval as interaction with text, with specific projects in user modeling, interface design, interaction techniques, and evaluation of interactive systems. Nick is currently the Chair of ACM SIGIR.
