New for CHI 2000 CHI 2000 extends a special invitation for submissions related to the conference theme, The Future is Here. The CHI Development Consortium will focus on the evolution of HCI to encompass computers leaving the desktop, becoming increasingly portable and embedded, moving into nearly every environment. The emerging link between television and computers, the relative simplicity of Internet boxes and the rapid growth in Internet access are changing entertainment habits, information-seeking strategies and communication. Thus we see that computers will affect a growing community of people, more diverse in their background, skills and computer training than today's users typically are. CHI 2000 re-establishes the Organization Overview category, which enables research and development groups to present themselves, their projects, and their development philosophies. Of particular interest are organizations that are consistent with the CHI 2000 Conference Special Areas. The Short Talks and Interactive Posters category presents opportunities to present brief presentations of ongoing work to the HCI community. In the Interactive Poster format, authors and attendees will be able to have more in-depth discussions. Panels at CHI 2000 will have a modified review process that takes into account the feasibility of producing the panel and ensuring appropriate audience participation. This review process is intended to identify the most interesting and thought-provoking panel concepts. CHI 2000 encourages participation in the Basic Research Symposium, which will be held as a workshop on Sunday and Monday. It aims at providing a venue for discussing general, underlying basic issues of HCI as well as presenting research not yet mature enough for publication and presentation at the conference. CHI 2000 asks all submissions be accompanied by an optional electronic submission; this is required for Papers submissions, however. This will help to speed up and ease the review and publication process. CHI 2000 explicitly continues to encourage the presentation of technical work in the video medium, including Video Papers (submitted to the Papers category) and Video Demonstrations (submitted to Demonstrations), as started at CHI 99. |
