Development Consortium: Beyond the Desktop
Deadline:
13 September 1999
Each year, the Development Consortium sets out to look at the issues and directions that the HCI community and SIGCHI should develop in the coming years. For CHI 2000, the Development Consortium will focus on "Beyond the Desktop" - the extraordinary growth of computer based devices and services world-wide that are becoming embedded in the way we live. Areas affected by portable, wearable and embedded computing include communications, home entertainment and automation, e-commerce, transportation, financial and health services.
Issues to consider could include:
- the limitations of being human
- use of small, powerful, and diverse types of devices
- usage context: public, private, and personal
- device usage and the evolution of social practices, privacy and trust
- enhancing community and communication
- application and device ecology
- the evolution of consumer expectations and wants
- interaction technologies
- enabling effective control, convenience, and enhancing the experience of use
- design practice
- the daily practice of designing for and catering to social context and user diversity
Format
Prepare a position paper of two pages using the Conference Publications Format. We strongly prefer an additional electronic submission as a PDF file by email to the Send To address shown. This is optional, but will greatly assist the reviewing process. Please refer to Electronic submissions.
In addition to your position paper please outline on a separate page your motivation for participating. Also, prepare an electronic version of the motivation paper as a simple email message.
Review criteria
Submissions will be reviewed on the basis of their relevance to the theme and their potential for stimulating discussion at the workshop.
Upon Acceptance
Applicants to the Consortium will be notified of acceptance by 7 November 1999. Accepted position papers will be published in the CHI 2000 Extended Abstracts. Authors of accepted position papers will receive an Author Kit with detailed instructions on how to submit the final camera-ready copy of the extended abstract for publication. The camera-ready copy is due on 13 December 1999.
At the Conference
"Beyond the Desktop" will be a special workshop held on the Sunday and Monday before the conference. Participants will receive free registration for Sunday and Monday, including lunches and coffee breaks. Participants are responsible for their own travel expenses and for their own CHI 2000 conference registration.
After the Conference
Following the conference a report summarizing the outcome will be published in the SIGCHI Bulletin.
